Barcode Technology - ISSN Barcode               Hide the description

The ISSN (International Standard Serial Number) serves the short unmistakable identification of sequentially

appearing publications, e.g., magazines. The ISSN is nearly similar to the ISBN for books.
The ISSN exists of 8 digits, which are split by a hyphen in two groups of 4 digits. The hyphen itself has no meaning for the code. It only serves as an optical difference to other codes. The first 7 digits display the real ISSN number. The 8th digit is the check number which is computed according to Modulo 11.
ISSN is a special form of the EAN-13 code, it is created using the EAN-13 symbology with a special prefix.

Valid characters: 1234567890X.

ISSN barcode have the prefix of "977".

An ISSN barcode is composed of 5 different sections:.

"ISSN" must precede the number.
The numbers 977 should follow "ISSN".
The first 7 digits of the ISSN (the 8th digit is an ISSN check digit and is discarded when encoding with EAN13).
2-digit price code, usually 00.
EAN13 check digit.

ISSN is one of the many barcode formats currently in use.

A Barcode is a method of representing data in a visual, machine-readable form.

The barcode formats has two categories:

One-dimensional (1D) --- Barcodes represented data by varying the widths and spacings of parallel lines.

Two-dimensional (2D) --- Using rectangles, dots, hexagons and other geometric patterns to represented data.

ISSN is 1D barcode.

To encode the data "977345678912" for the ISSN barcode, simply key in "977345678912" in the Barcode Generator.

ISSN barcode has 13 digits.

The prefix is "977".

Check digit:

Encoding an ISSN number into an EAN13 barcode varies in complexity based on how the information is being encoded. To encode the ISSN manually, begin the data to be encoded with 977 followed by the first 7 digits of the ISSN, then the 2-digit price code which is usually 00. For example, an ISSN 2496-5524, the data to be encoded should be 977249655200. After this, the EAN13 check digit must be added to the end of the string. To calculate the EAN13 mod10 check digit manually, follow these simple instructions:
Starting with the first number on the right, take the sum of all odd numbers (977249655200) and multiply by 3 to get 75.
Starting with the second number on the right, take the sum of all even numbers (977249655200) to get 31.
Add the results from steps 1 & 2 to get 106.
The difference between the step 3 result and the next highest multiple of 10 is the EAN13 check digit. In this case, the next highest multiple of 10 is 110 and the difference between 110 and 106 is 4.

Human Readable:

Most barcodes display their corresponding values below them, which makes it possible to human read and manually  enter the barcode values into the equivalent system when the barcode label is worn out and cannot be read by the barcode scanner.

The Advantages of using barcodes:

The barcode system provide better data. Because a barcode can store various information such as inventory and pricing, especially when using QR Code, it can store thousands of characters, so the data stored in the barcode can be quickly obtained by the barcode reader, this fast turnaround ensures that time is not wasted on data entry or retrieval. In addition, the barcode can be customized to include other relevant information as needed. They provide fast and reliable data for various applications.

When barcodes are used in management information systems, they can promote better decision-making. Because data is obtained quickly and accurately, you can quickly obtain a full range of information for the entire company or organization, so it is possible to make more informed decisions. Better decisions can ultimately save time and money.

Barcodes are cheap and user-friendly, providing an indispensable tool for tracking data from pricing to inventory. The end result of a comprehensive bar code system is reduced overhead.
